James Butcher a boat owner who lived there until 1883 succeeded him. 30 High Street Pic , Pic 30 High Street In 1900 it was the home of Joseph Edward Cook who was the Borough's accountant and clerk to the Oulton Broad School Board, by 1932 it had become a Veterinary Surgery run by John Magee. In the 1967 Kelly's Directory all it says for No30 is that a Mr Fredrick R Dawson was living there. / A private residence  / 5 December, 2024
31 High Street 31old , detail 31 , 31 As far back as 1865 No31 has been a Chemist, in this year it belonged to Joseph Hunt Snell, in 1900 Edmund Dodge traded as a Chemist and Druggist until about the 1960's when a Mr H Hemmell was listed as taking over. In the1990’s it had become the Attic antique shop and now is a private house. In the 2nd picture you can see clearly No31. / 5 December, 2024
32 High Street gg , pic gg , 32 No 32 appears to have always been a house, Tudor inside just like 31 next door. If you look at the roof line you can clearly see the Georgian frontage which has been added on later. In 1932 kelly' s directory lists a Mr John waiter Baron Endacott as living there, and in 1967 a Mr Ronald T Stevens. Today it is still a private house.  / 23 November, 2024

33 High Street 33 , pic pic This impressive pair of Georgian houses started out as one big house and were converted into two houses sometime in the Victorian Era of the town. In 1865 after it was converted, Mr James Canham who was a Harbour pilot, lived at No33. In 1900 Mr Edward Charles Pipe who was a builder lived at No34 he also had his yard down on Whapload Road. / 22 April, 2024

35 High Street ss , dd ff , 35 High Street No 35 started out its life as a single house but after the Pub closed at No36 it was purchased by Mr Gaskin and he knocked through to No35 to make his greengrocers bigger but during the late 19901s it was put back into two separate houses. Stebbings Illustrated Guide to Lowestoft 1894 38hs Since the 1990s the only thing the same is the Golden Phoenix which is still trading after all the old businesses are long gone! Before the building looked like it is today it was just two numbers which are 38-39, in 1880 the site was the Seaview Temperance House and Boarding Establishment and it replaced an earlier business run by Charles Collier. / 4 January, 2024
38c High Street pic ,  CREDIT:F. Stebbings Illustrated Guide to Lowestoft 1894 38c High Street Smith's Furnishing Stores occupied 38-40 from at least 1921 as the attached invoice shows. The business had been established over 100 years at that time so I guess must have been one of the oldest businesses in Lowestoft. The proprietor in 1921 was a lady, Charlotte S Sims so it's not clear if Mr Smith was still around then. /   We are a small independent ceramics studio based on Lowestoft’s historic High Street.  / 10 May, 2024

The agents for the bank in the 1830s were John Brown and Daniel Chaston, linen and woollen drapers. In the Kelly's Directory of 1932 the shop has passed to Brewsters which is a bakers, pastry-cooks and restaurant. 59 High Street pic ,  pic 59 High Street ,  pic No 59 started as a chemist in 1859. It was Robert Morris, followed by Sales and Nurse in 1900, then Edwin. C. Corkhill in 1932. In 1967 T. B. Small and in 2000 A. S. Wren pharmacy was in residence and finally Boots took over. In 2012 it closed.  Excellent example of an old chemist shop. 7 High Street 49 , 49 64 , new This photo taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s shows Nos. 7 to 10 High Street not long before they were demolished.  The vacant lot next to No. 7 is the site of No. 6 which has already been demolished.  When the 1911 census was taken it contained 5 rooms and was occupied by a fisherman named William Boggis with his wife, Frances, and their four young children. / The Town Green was originally a northward extension of the High Street but the space on which the green now stands was created out of property destruction and damage caused by WW2 air raids, and on / 11 December, 2024
70 High Street 70 , Pic 70 In 1865 John Raymond Dye ran his Watchmakers business from No70 but by 1900 the shop was knocked through to No71 and the shop belonged to Charles Fry who ran his Tailor, Hatter and Outfitter shop. In the Kelly's Directory of 1932 No70-71 was a Perambulator dealer (baby carriages) and it carried on till around the 1960's. / Trophies medals and engraved plaques. In the Kelly's Directory for 1932, Arthur George James had opened the shop as a Fruitier's, but by 1967 Miss E Lane had reopened it as a Fancy Goods Dealer. In 1900 Edward John Bungard has taken over the shop and was running it as a Hosier and Haberdasher. 8 High Street 47 , pic 65 No. 8 High Street seems to have been created, probably in the early 1800s, by sub-dividing a larger house into 3 smaller units. No. 8 only contained 4 main rooms. In the 1950s it was incorporated into the adjacent No. 7 High Street. If you look at the 2nd picture you will see the mosaic tiled front step spelling out W and E Turner who ran the shop well into the late 1960's as a Boot and Shoe shop. / 6 November, 2024

92 High Street old ,  pic 92 ,  plant In 1865 Benjamin Parker was running his Linen Drapers from No92 but by 1876 it had been replaced by George Henry Taylors, Tailor and Hatter's business. 94 High Street pic 94 ,  sweet In 1865 No94 was the Chemist run by Benjamin Morris Edmonds, by 1900 the shop was still a Chemist and Druggist but now it had passed to James Fisher. In the 1932 Kelly's Directory the building was still a Chemist and was still owned by James Fisher and Simply called, Fishers Drug Stores. / A Traditional Sweet Shop opening on Lowestoft high street, specialising in sweets from days gone by. All at Sea with the Lowestoft Smack Race LT472 Excelsior  built in 1921 ,  a Lowestoft Smack Lowestoft's Vessel Festival got under way this morning. A multitude of old sailing vessels raced each other just off the harbour mouth. There were stalls and music and a bar! / 23 September, 2023
